homeopathy

At our Institute we use complex homeopathic preparations to treat various ailments.  We use them when our autonomic response testing indicates that a homeopathic remedy would work better than a medication or an herb or would be safer.

The average conventional physician believe that homeopathic preparations merely act through the placebo effect.  Most importantly, conventional physicians contend that all the substances in a homeopathic preparation are so dilute that their is essentially no active ingredient in homeopathic preparations. In effect they are  stating that homeopathic preparations are tantamount to prescribing plain water.  Since they claim that homeopathic remedies have no effect at all, even the ones who vigorously oppose homeopathy as “quackery” admit that homeopathic preparations are completely safe.

For many years, I believed my colleagues and the consensus of conventional medicine and assumed homeopathy to be too far fetched to bother employing.

However, about 8 years ago, a patient with a refractory fungal infection of the finger presented to my office. This patient had gone to three different dermatologists and had tried three different potent anti-fungal drugs with no benefit.  A brilliant colleague of mine had recommended I try a homeopathic preparation and showed me where I could obtain such a preparation. To my great amazement and surprise, after the patient used the anti-fungal preparation for one month, the infection never returned.

After that experience, I tried other homeopathic preparations to great effect.  The main advantages of a homeopathic preparation is that they are essentially 99.999999..% safe.   They are comparatively inexpensive.

How do I take a homeopathic remedy?

Ideally oral drops or pills are best taken when nothing has entered the mouth within 30 minutes of taking the preparation. Hence, you can take it either 30 minutes before or after a meal.  You should not brush your teeth or had anything else in the mouth.  Sometimes we find that patients due to their schedule find it difficult to achieve this optimal time to take the remedy and hence end up skipping the doses unintentionally; If you find it too difficult to take it at this ideal time, we prefer that you take the remedy anyway just after the meal.  Also homeopathics that are required to be taken three times a day can be taken every two hours in the evening if you have forgotten the daytime earlier doses.  For instructions on specific remedies that we have prescribed click: Remedy instuctions

Here is an outline excerpt from a powerpoint presentation I gave at a medical conference:

Hippocrates ( 470-400BC)
“father of medicine”

Two methods of healing:

By ‘contraries’ and

By ‘similars’

Every disease has its own nature and arises from external causes,

Advised against meddlesome interference by physicians/healers

Dr. Samuel Hahnemann (1755–1843).

Hahnemann graduated from medical school in 1779,

Practiced for 9 yrs, became disillusioned and quit practice

Hahnemann worked as a chemist and part time as a translator

Like cures like

Hahneman translated a medical book, Materia Medica that discussed the use of cinchona bark (quinine) in the treatment of malaria.

Hahnemann experimented on himself by taking a cinchona.

He developed a fever, sweats, body pains and other symptoms similar to those of malaria.

Hahnemann wondered: what if cinchona cured malaria because it produces malaria-like symptoms in healthy people?

Like cures like

He tested other substances, and carefully recorded the symptoms produced.

He administered substances that produced in healthy people the same symptoms for which the patient sought treatment.

These patients improved enough to remove any doubt about the validity of his hypothesis.

Essence of homeopathy

find a substance that produces in a healthy person the same symptoms the patient suffers from.

give the patient that substance and watch the "magic" that follows

The Latin phrase Similia similibus curentur defines the one and only principle of homeopathy: "Let likes be cured by likes."

Like cures like

Hahneman, again set up practice again

He looked for the “similimum” – remedy whose ‘symptom picture’ (based on the provings ) matched that of his patients.

His methods met with disbelief and ridicule

But patients flowed in. He frequently charged patients only if they got better!

"proving."

Hahnemann continued to testing substances on healthy people (himself, and family members) to determine their specific symptom pictures.  This process was named “proving”

Hahnemann proved around 100 substances during his career.

Approx. two thousand substances have been proven in this fashion by others.

Homeopathic remedies come from plant, animal and mineral sources. Some of them are strong poisons, some are inert substances in their crude form.

When properly prepared  they lose their toxic potential and acquire the ability to heal.

REMEDY PREPARATION:

Hahnemann recognized that giving poisonous substances in crude form caused side effects.

Hahnemann attempted to avoid side effects by decreasing the doses

After regular serial dilutions, the substance lost not only its side effect but all its potency

He experimented by shaking the substances vigorously after each dilution.  Called it ‘succussion’.

The preparations now lost its toxic side effects but became more potent with each dilution.

Resultant remedy called ‘potentised remedy’

Potencies

A ‘30c’ dilution: a serial dilution of 1 to 100 made thirty times, which yields a final product diluted 1060 times from the initial substance.

Far beyond Avogadro’s number of 6.0 x 1023.

the chance of finding a single molecule of the initial substance in the final product is zero for all practical purposes.

These preparations are referred to as sub-molecular.

30c is a low potency and homeopaths commonly use dilutions such as 1M (102,000), 10M (1020,000), or 50M (10100,000). While it makes no sense whatsoever in light of present day science, in practice, the higher the dilution, the stronger and longer lasting the effect.

Greatest Obstacle of Homeopathy

No current scientific way to explain this “sub-molecular” effect.

Evidence that water molecules when shaken with the substance retain some form of “memory” or information.

However, plenty of blinded studies that show that homeopathics have clear physiological effects on animals and humans

A metaphysical explanation

Concept of vital force: Qi

In homeopathic philosophy, the Vital Force is seen as elemental and indivisible,

which means it reacts as a whole to any irritant

If an irritant is strong enough, it can produce a stable derangement of the Vital Force, which we call disease.

Because the Vital Force is elemental, it can sustain only one kind of derangement (disease) at a time

Metaphysical explanation

Homeopathic remedies directly affect the Vital Force

Vital Force perceives a homeopathic remedy as a disease producing irritant, and it stirs the Vital Force into action to repel it.

If the disease state produced by the remedy is similar to the disease we’re trying to treat, the Vital Force recognizes the similarity and, in repelling the remedy irritant, it also repels the disease.

Because only one disease can be active within the Vital Force at any given time, only one remedy is necessary to cure it.

Homeopathy in the U.S.

brought to U.S. by the students of Hahnemann in mid-18th century.

by the end of the century there were thousands of practicing homeopaths in this country.

popular until the beginning of 20th century, when modern drug companies started coming out with new drugs which appeared to be quite effective and easily administered.

Much easier to prescribe aspirin than to take a comprehensive case to find a good homeopathic remedy.

Homeopathy in the U.S.

Most homeopaths took the easy route, and the science of homeopathy declined to the point of virtual non-existence.

No unified voice in homeopathy: High potency advocates fought with the low potency advocates

A handful of faithful practitioners kept homeopathy going until it was again recognized for its virtues in the 1970s.

Homeopathy is now enjoying a strong comeback.

Classical Homeopathy

Even patients who appear to have several diseases such as asthma, gastritis, headaches, rash and depression need only one remedy.

All of these "diseases" are but symptoms of one central disturbance existing within the Vital Force.

Classical Homeopathy

lengthy process-an hour or two with a patient on the first visit. Exquisitely detailed initial history a minimal physical examination.

all the symptoms in great detail.

what makes the complaint better or worse, what time of day it is the worst,

what seems to bring it on,

associated with any other symptoms

general physical makeup:

patient’s psyche.

Repertorize

To repertorize, a practitioner refers to a repertory, a cross reference of all the symptoms in the Materia Medica.

Materia Medica lists various remedies and their characteristic symptoms as seen in provings.

The homeopath uses the repertory to find those remedies that have in their picture all the symptoms that are significant in the patient’s case.

Once a remedy is selected, it may be given in one dose or in a series of doses.

An apparent improvement may not be moving in the right direction; an apparent worsening may be a therapeutic aggravation.

Case example of pt treated with Classical homeopathy

35 yo pharmaceutical rep. w active SLE in complete remission with a single classic homeopathic drops.

Case example of Classical homeopathy using Pyrogenium

This substance is derived from raw meat that is left in the sun until it rots.

Causes severe symptoms: diarrhea, vomiting, fevers with foul smelling sweat, restlessness, body aches.

A patient who has not ingested rotten meat, but has these symptoms for some other reason, will be helped by Pyrogenium

Case example with pyrigenium

50y.o. man who had developed a "cold" that just wouldn’t go away for three weeks.

He had constant fevers, foul smelling sweats, restlessness, terrible mouth odor.

He wasn’t improving. Antibiotics failed to improve him.

He was given pyrigenium

lab work was drawn and pt was sent home.

Hahneman’s followers:

Constantine Hering (1800-80)

Founder of Hahnemann Medical College

70 professors, treated 50,000 pts/yr

Trained over 3500 homeopaths

Developed isopathy: e.g. potentized disease products.

Law of cures:

Innermost organ to outer most organ

Top to bottom

Old suppressed symptoms reappear in process of cure.

Hahneman’s followers

James Tyler Kent (1849-1916)

Advocated very high potencies MM (dilute1,000 times) and CM (diluted 100,000)

Developed concept of constitutional types

Disadvantage of Classical Homeopathy

Impractical and difficult to practice

Requires considerable training

Time consuming

Inconsistent results unless in the hands of an exceptionally skilled practitioner

Too many external toxins in the environment that cloud the primary picture

Complex homeopathy
Hans-Heinrich Reckeweg(1905-1985)

broke with the tradition established by Dr. Samuel Hahnemann, M.D., who postulated that only one remedy should be used at a time.

Dr. Reckeweg postulated that if there were ten remedies that did the same thing, then it would be prudent to add all ten to one formula, and let the patient’s system choose the one that it wanted.

concept of the Homaccorde:

multiple potencies of the same remedies,

and let the patient’s system choose not only which remedy it wanted, but which potency of the remedy it wanted.

He developed a whole line of these combination remedies, covering all phases of medical problems, and declared his new field of medicine Homotoxicology.

There are key advantages to using potency chords:

Deeper action

Fewer initial aggravations than classical dosing

Doses can be repeated

Broader spectrum of effect

No problems selecting the appropriate potency

No problems in assessing the duration or spectrum of action

Mixing high and low potencies produces an effect that lies somewhere in between: rapid onset (low potency) and long-lasting action (high potency)

Complex Homeopathy and isopathy

Isopathy was introduced by Dr. Lux in 1823 who along with Hering

ignores the symptom picture and give the substance which caused the problem in the first place.

It is common in isopathy to give a product of a disease (nosode) for the disease itself,

E.g. treat lyme disease by giving potentized dilutions of borrelia (not live).

Many people use it as a shortcut to repertorizing.

Complex Homeopathy

In the course of time it has proved itself well.

It has been also called the German system of homeopathy

Much of the world still practices classical homeopathy (which ironically was invented in Germany by Hahneman).

Case example with pyrigenium

When patient returned, 2 days later:

labs from the first visit revealed early kidney failure, and hemolysis.

But the patient claimed he felt better!!

Pt continued his homeopathic and within a week completely recovered.

Complex Homeopathy

was seen as a “bridge” between allopathic medicine and homeopathic medicine

Allopathic diagnostic indications were treated with homeopathically prepared mixtures.

allows allopaths to use homeopathy

A single remedy picture was unnecessary

Homotoxicology

Homotoxicology is the name given to the form of complex homeopathy developed by Hans Reckeweg.

In addition to plant, mineral, and animal derived substances, he added catalyst (including enzymes, hormones)

Immunomodulators: potentized suis organ extracts, nosodes, venoms.  Modulates immune response.

Fundamental principals of Homotoxicology

Diseases are the expression of the body combating poisons/toxins and that it wants to combat and excrete these poisons.

Homotoxins (human-toxins) are substances that are chemical or biochemical and non-material influences which can cause illness in humans.

Homotoxicology is a therapeutic branch which enables deep cleansing of the body tissues, removing old toxins, disease processes and degenerative debris, leaving the fluids clean, fresh and able to function as intended.

Homotoxicology

Treat the presenting symptom with a complex homeopathic remedy

Treat the rest of the body with a “phase remedy” that help obtain a deeper cleansing of the system.

Advantages of Homeopathy over Allopathy

Homeopathy is safer

Has potential to cure underlying physiological imbalance

Homeopathy is cheaper

Difference between
Homeopathy and Allopathy

Homeo = same suffering

Regulatory medicine

Side-effects almost always temporary

Comparatively fewer studies

Allo = other suffering

Suppressive medicine

potentially life-threatening side-effects

Far more studies

Difference between
Homeopathy and Allopathy

Metaphysical explanation

Previously very difficult to practice because purely individualized

Homeopathics are difficult to patent and hence have low profit potential to companies

Biochemical or biomechanical exp

Cook book symptom/disease based

Pharmaceuticals have high profit potential

Approach for the novice:
when to consider homeopathy

When allopathic medicines are either not working or appear to cause more potential harm:

Many chronic conditions: eg.  IBS, GERD, Chronic Fatigue, Lyme disease,

Many viral syndromes esp. URI’s

Many functional problems where a patient does not have a clearly defined disease and has a “syndrome”

Start with well established proven products such as ‘traumeel’

Summary

Current science can not explain how homeopathy works.

However there is enough data that show clear clinical effects on animals and humans

Many of the allopathic treatments in outpatient medicine for various ailments such as arthritis, colds, functional symptoms have great potential harm

Homeopathics are considerably safer and should be considered when the evidence for allopathic medicine is weak.
