Ozone Therapy

General Information

Ozone is a form of Bio-Oxidative therapy. Bio-Oxidative therapy is an umbrella term for therapies that promote healing by flooding the body with oxygen. Bio-Oxidative therapies include: pure oxygen, hyperbaric oxygen, hydrogen peroxide and oxygen/ozone therapy.

In our office, bio-oxidative therapy involves introducing small amounts of medical grade Oxygen/Ozone into the body. Oxygen/Ozone is administered via gas or water to kill microorganisms, improve cellular function, and promote the healing of damaged tissues.

Ozone – What is it?

Ozone (O3) is a colorless gas consisting of three atoms of oxygen. It is an “energized” form of oxygen with extra electrons. Ozone is created naturally in the earth’s atmosphere in two ways. The first is when the sun’s ultraviolet rays combine with oxygen in the air to create the protective ozone layer. The second and more common way ozone is produced is when lightning strikes the oxygen in the air and converts it to ozone. Ozone is detectable by the fresh, clean scent you find after a rainstorm, and is essentially the driving component of fresh, clean air.

Ozone protects living organisms by surrounding the earth at high altitudes and absorbing the sun’s harmful rays. Ozone forms near ground level and produces smog when pollutants, emitted by cars, power plants, industrial boilers, oil refineries, chemical plants, and other sources react chemically in the presence of heat and sunlight. Ozone is not the cause of smog, it is a by-product of smog. Ozone, a natural purifier, actually helps clean the atmosphere of those and other dangerous compounds.

For medical and dental purposes, ozone is created artificially in an Oxygen/Ozone generator by pulsing high currents of electricity through medical-grade pure oxygen.

Oxygen/Ozone: A Brief History

Medical ozone has been used to disinfect and treat disease for more than 150 years. It has been estimated that over 10 million people have been given oxygen therapies over the past seventy years to treat over 300 different conditions. Oxygen/Ozone therapies are administered alone or they are used in addition to traditional medical and dental procedures. Although used by millions of patients in Europe since the early 1960’s, the therapeutic use of medical ozone is largely a mystery to North Americans.

Oxygen/Ozone therapy has a long history of research and clinical application. A German chemist, C.D. Schonbein, discovered ozone in 1840. Oxygen/Ozone was used in the 1850’s to disinfect operating rooms in European hospitals and decades later to clean municipal water supplies. Today, the majority of bottled drinking water is purified by ozone. The ability of ozone to inactivate bacterial contamination has made it the non-chemical alternative to chlorination with over 3,000 municipalities around the world using ozone to clean water and sewage.

The first medical application of Oxygen/Ozone was in 1870 when Dr. C. Lender used Oxygen/Ozone to purify blood in test tubes.

The medical use of Oxygen/Ozone became widespread in the early 1900’s in Europe when Oxygen/Ozone was used with excellent results for a variety of conditions including skin diseases, gangrene, burns, trench foot and influenza. In 1920, Dr. T.H. Oliver reported the clinical uses of Bio-Oxidative therapies in the Lancet, a highly respected medical journal. As of 1929, more than 114 diseases were listed for treatment with Oxygen/Ozone therapy. Around the same time, a Swiss dentist, Dr. E.A. Fisch introduced the concept of Oxygen/Ozone in dentistry and published numerous papers on the subject. In 1931, Dr. Otto Warburg won his first Nobel Prize for his discovery that the fundamental cause of all degenerative disease is a condition called hypoxia (oxygen starvation at the cellular level). In 1944, Dr. Warburg won his second Nobel Prize for his work linking cancer to damaged cell respiration caused by a lack of oxygen and a buildup of toxicity. In the 1950’s, through the efforts of Dr. J. Hansler in Germany, modern materials including resistant plastics and the development of modern ozone generators made it possible to safely handle and administer medical ozone.

Bio-Oxidative therapies are currently being studied in major medical research centers in the U.S. and throughout the therapy with doctors in over 20 countries throughout the world using it to treat infection. Oxygen/Ozone therapy is currently being used in Germany, Italy, France, Russia, Romania, Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary, Bulgaria, Israel, Japan, Singapore, Brazil, Cuba, Mexico, and in 4 Canadian provinces.

How Does Oxygen/Ozone Therapy Work?

The principle is simple. Unhealthy cells and microorganisms cannot exist in the presence of ozone (supercharged oxygen) and cells cannot become diseased if they are supplied with sufficient oxygen.

Ozone acts in the body in two ways: by oxidation and oxygenation. When ozone (O3) is introduced into the body, its third oxygen atom attaches itself to harmful microorganisms. In doing this, the ozone oxidizes or destroys them. This process is called oxidation. Then, ozone changes to oxygen (O2) increasing the oxygen levels in the body. This process is called oxygenation.

Since oxygen is the most critical requirement for life, substances that increase the level of oxygen in the body are most beneficial to optimum health.

How We Administer Ozone

We use the following ozone treatment modalities:

  • Major Autohemotherapy: Ozone is mixed with the 1/2 pint of the patient’s
    blood and re-administered. Read more
  • Prolozone Therapy: Ozone is directly injected into soft tissue as a gas. Read more
  • Rectal Ozone therapy: Ozone is insufflated into the rectum. Read more
  • Bladder Ozone: Ozone gas insufflated into the bladder. Read more
  • Vaginal Ozone: Ozone gas insufflated into the vagina. Read more
  • Bagging Ozone: Extremities are treated with with Ozone gas insufflated into bag. Read more
  • Auricular Ozone: Ozone is insufflated into the ear canal. Read more
  • Ozonated Water: water saline infused with Ozone. Read more
  • Ozonated Saline: saline infused with Ozone. Read more

Benefits of Ozone

We have found that ozone therapies can tremendously benefit the healing processes in the body.

  • Chronic Infections: many conditions such as chronic mold, viral, bacterial infections respond to ozone therapy even when other treatments have failed. It is especially useful for tooth infections
  • Chronic inflammatory conditions involving the bladder, colon, sinus can frequently be helped with ozone therapy
  • Prolozone therapy: when added to standard prolotherapy injections, the results are better in that a stronger and more lasting response occurs such that patients need fewer treatments to reach their target goal of healing. We have found that it is equal to or superior to “PRP- (platelet enriched plasma) injections and ¼ as expensive
  • Chronic fatigue: ozone appears to help significant of numbers of patients who have chronic fatigue. Some research suggest that ozone may help the mitochondria function more optimally. (The mitochondria is the energy producing organelle of each cell in the body.)
"My wife went to Dr. Brobyn with an extremely rare and difficult case. Dr. Brobyn and her staff were amazing! They never gave up, when other doctors did. They truly care about their patients and never stop trying."
